I fancied a change yesterday. First things first, breakfast. I should have gone to Jack &Ada’s as I’m a disciple of theirs but I’d been craving Wetherspoons Eggs Benedict for days so that needed sating.
St Matthews Hall was busy with fellow Saddlers getting ready to hit the M5. Good to see Kimbo, Swainy and Leachy in there and to have a catch up with the former. I normally see Kimbo in less sedate environments so good to be able to chat.
I made full use of the free refills. I’ve drank so much of their coffee of late I’m gonna be booked into Wetherspoons Latte Anonymous before I know it.
From there I went to Mozzas- Morrisons if you’re not from round here. I’d seen that I’d got 2 days to buy a 38 pack of Birds Eye chicken dippers which would glean me 750 More Card points. I like chicken dippers and points so it had to be done.
I didn’t actually need anything from Mozzas – I have a delivery coming tonight after 9 but I’m a corporate execs dream so an offer on the app and I was in like a shot.
You may wonder why my delivery is coming so late. Two reasons. A) it’s cheaper and B) I like deliveries when it’s dark so I can open the door wearing a cloak and holding a lantern to convince the driver that I’m practising to go on The Traitors.
Joking aside, I could really do with it now as I’m out of Oatibix and Greek yogurt.
Mozzas was already getting into Halloween mood with decorations and appropriate music being played. And what came on while I was scanning my goodies? The theme tune to The X Files. These self-service tills are stressful enough as it is without the heightened tension that there might be a supernatural being in the vicinity, lurking and ready to slip an unexpected item into the bagging area.
Talking of The X Files, did Mulder and Scully ever get it on? I stopped watching when I realised every episode was the same. Something spooky would happen. Mulder would have a theory. Scully would be like “that’s bollocks.” Mulder would be proven correct. Then at the end you’d think they were going to do it.
I digress. I didn’t hang around in Mozzas. I made it out without there being something strange in the neighbourhood. Glad I didn’t have to call Ghostbusters as I don’t get free minutes on my sim only plan.
I got home and caught up with the previous night’s Celebrity Traitors with the odd ending of James Acaster and Maya Jama trying to make Ross Kemp and Jerry Hall yawn. Not the most bizarre tele ever though. I used to watch Eurotrash.
So that change that I fancied? Well, I was off to watch Walsall Rugby Club. I blogged about a game I went to in 2021, where I said I’d be back soon. You can catch up on that one here but it took until the play-off game of last season until I actually returned which ended in an unlucky defeat.
During the Summer though they launched a book club which I’ve been to every meeting of so I thought it was time to visit for a match.
It was Walsall v Stoke, so a local Derby. As I’ve only seen Walsall FC draw this season, I wondered if that would follow me here. Guessing that there isn’t many draws in Rugby, hence why they don’t have a version of the Football Pools coupon.
It would be just my luck to see a Rugby 0-0 draw. I wonder if that has actually ever happened.

A fiver in which is an absolute bargain. I went to grab a coffee (£1.50) and some food. As I left the club, we had already scored 2 converted tries and were 14-0 up. So, I’m an expert at missing Walsall FC goals, now it’s Walsall RFC trys. Next Summer I’m going to go to Walsall Cricket Club and try to miss our opening batsman hit a century.

Typically, I sat down just in time to see Stoke pull an unconverted try back. Then we took control and led 33-5 at half time.

It went try crazy in the second half. We scored one to the right where he then got to turn round and go plonk it between the posts. I always like that. Apologies for the lack of names but I’m still learning the Walsall footballers that came in in the Summer, so I’ve no chance of our Rugby boys names just yet.

Both teams had a player sin binned late on, and Stoke scored the last try of the game. Good job it wasn’t “next try the winner” as it would have been harsh as that late score reduced the deficit to the final score of 73-19.

The club was busy afterwards and I saw the wonderful Alix who founded and runs the Book Club, as I negotiated the crowd clutching a much-needed pint of Guinness Zero. Cracking afternoon, a great set up at Walsall Rugby Club and I’ll deffo be back for a game soon, and I’ll certainly return once I’ve read The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah which is our current homework.
